  1. 1889-1953. US astronomer, who discovered the
  2. existence of other galaxies outside our own,
  3. and classified them according to their shape.
  4. His theory that the universe is expanding is
  5. now generally accepted. Born in Marshfield,
  6. Missouri, Hubble originally studied law
  7. before joining Yerkes Observatory 1914,
  8. subsequently moving to Mount Wilson, where in
  9. 1923 he discovered Cepheid variable stars
  10. outside our own Galaxy. In 1925 he introduced
  11. the classification of galaxies as spirals,
  12. barred spirals and ellipticals. In 1929 he
  13. announced Hubble's law, which states that the
  14. galaxies are moving apart at a rate that
  15. increases with their distance.
